Is Remote Work Healthy?

laptop with stethoscope next to it

The past year has been one full of learning and changes along with added stress and loss for many. When COVID hit many businesses were shutdown and many made drastic changes to their working protocols.  Those staying open had and still are managing COVID precautions for their employees and their customers.

Many office workers moved to working remotely.  Some companies such as Facebook. Dropbox, American Express, Salesforce and many others are now seeing the benefits of remote work and allowing employees to continue working remotely indefinitely.

Pros for remote work:

  • No commute means more time for other activities outside of working
  • Less use of vehicle
  • Many can work the hours they are more productive.
  • Inside temperature controlled by employee vs organization
  • Pets around for comfort
  • Can more easily fit in time for exercise and outdoor time.

Cons

  • May not have dedicated office space.
  • May have spouse or children home as distractions.
  • May not have a desk, proper adjustable chair or other equipment needed to work healthy.
  • Some miss coworker camaraderie.
  • Some are not disciplined enough to manage time.

Many of the cons to remote work can be easily corrected with a remote ergonomics assessment. Even those using a kitchen table can be instructed in easy fixes to improve their workstation ergonomics. Ergonomics is the first step to healthy working.

With wellness training employees can learn to manage themselves as they interact with their workstation. Remote assessments are cost effective, easy to schedule and have a big impact on keeping you and your workforce healthy.
